Pierre Cardin Large desk c. 1970 Brushed steel, polished steel, laminate-covered chip-wood. 76.2 x 224.2 x 104.1 cm. (30 x 88 1/4 x 41 in)
Provenance Collection of Bill Tornade, France Catalogue Essay Pierre Cardin revolutionised the fashion world of the 1960s and 1970s with his futuristic designs and use of unusual materials, and his progressive outlook on design quickly extended itself into architectural and exclusive high-end furniture projects. The infatuation with themes of science fiction and space travel that so dominated his clothing lines is evident in his furniture designs of the same period. Despite being known for implementing unconventional materials in his clothing, Cardin firmly believed that 'people don’t buy furniture because of the materials it’s made of. What they want is a piece of furniture that can express their dreams'. The swooping spaceship-like forms of the steel and hovering laminate in the present lot echo Cardin’s dreams of the perceived future of not only fashion but design as a whole. Read More
