PIERRE SUBLEYRAS Saint-Gilles du Gard 1699 - Rom 1749 Study for St. Jerome/ Saint Jerôme écoutant les trompettes du Jugement dernier Oil on canvas, 97,5 x 72,5 cm This newly discovered work is a painted preparatory study for the altarpiece "Saint Jerome Hearing the Trumpet of the Last Judgement", which was commissioned for the recently completed (in 1738) church of Santi Cosma e Damiano in Milan and is now to be found in Pinacoteca di Brera in the same city. The altarpiece measures 408 x 232 cm. The two other artists commissioned to paint the other chapels in this church were Pompeo Batoni and Giuseppe Bottani In our version of the painting, the model is posing nude in the studio, with a grape vine around his waist and an animal hide beneath his knee. Only the right-hand side shows a collection of books that prefigure the large format of the final version. Another version also exists (101 x 73 cm). Originally held by a private collector in Paris, this version was put up for auction by the Artcurial auction house on 7 November 2012 (catalogue no. 44) and sold for EUR 48,500. (This painting was reproduced in the catalogue for the exhibition entitled "Subleyras 1699-1749", which was hosted in Paris and then Rome in 1987; picture printed on page 246, right-hand side). This version differs from ours in several respects. The most important element is a box full of drawings, positioned in the bottom right-hand corner, which only appears in our version. Other sketches are known where the figure has been posed in the same position, but has an ageing, shaggy beard - like the final version of St. Jerome. (A version was sold by the auction house Porro in Milan on 9 November 2005 for EUR 73,200, while another was sold by the Cornette de Saint-Cyr auction house (catalogue no. 222) on 10 May 2010 for EUR 102,500). Les deux autres peintres qui se partageaient la commande pour les autres chapelles de cette église étaient Pompeo Batoni et Giuseppe Bottani Ici le modèle pose nu dans l'atelier avec des pampres de vigne autour de la taille et une peau de fauve sous son genou. Seule la partie droite montre une accumulation de livres qui préfigure le grand format. On connait une autre version (101 x 73 cm) en collection privée à Paris, puis sur le commerce d'art (vendue à Paris, le 7 novembre 2012, Artcurial, lot 44, 48500 ?, reproduite dans le catalogue de l'exposition « Subleyras 1699-1749 », Paris, Rome, 1987, p. 246, illustration à droite). Elle diffère de la nôtre par plusieurs détails, le plus important étant la présence ici d'un carton à dessin dans l'angle bas à droite qui est absent dans l'autre version. Il existe aussi des esquisses où la figure est dans la même position, vieillie, avec une barbe et habillée de drapés comme dans la version finale, représentant le saint Jérôme définitif (un exemplaire en vente à Milan, Porro, le 9 novembre 2005, lot 334, pour 73200 ? ; une autre version à vente à Paris, Cornette de Saint-Cyr, le 12 mai 2010, lot 222, pour 102 500 ?)
