Pioneer Aviation. A large Edwardian black and white photograph, showing the pioneer aviator Bentfield C. Hucks in his Blackburn aircraft with ground crew, circa 1911, 32.5 x 45cm mount aperture, framed and glazed (frame size 64 x 55cm) together with a photograveur showing Hucks in his Blackburn Mercury, circa 1911, printed by J Bacon & Sons and numbered 10045, 27 x 36, framed and glazed (frame size 40 x 48.5cm) (Qty: 2) Bentfield Charles Hucks (1884-1918) was an aviation innovator, he was a test pilot for numerous aircraft types and was the first Briton to perform a loop in an aircraft, which he performed in his Blériot at Hendon airfield in September 1913. Hucks gained his Royal Aero Club certificate in May 1911, flying a Blackburn monoplane. He joined the Royal Flying Corps on the outbreak of WWI and was sent to the Western Front. He was invalided after an attack of pleurisy in France before returning home and working as a test pilot at Hendon. Hucks died of pneumonia on 7 November 1918 (just days before the end of WWI), he is buried in Highgate cemetery.
