London: for T. Cadell, 1786 8vo. (182 x 115). Lacks half-title. New brown library buckram, preserving early 19th-century marbled paper free endpapers. Condition: text leaves a bit yellowed throughout. Provenance : H.L. Piozzi, presentation inscription and manuscript notes; William Augustus Conway; from Maggs, 2001. hester lynch thrale piozzi's presentation copy , inscribed on a front flyleaf "Presented to the kind Acceptance|of Mr. Conway|by|Hester Lynch Piozzi. |Bath 26: April 1819". Additionally, Mrs. Piozzi has written autograph manuscript notes on four pages (pp. 49, 63, 231 and 296). The first, in pencil, adds that Richardson, an attorney was "Represented in Hogarth's Election"; the second, also in pencil, is a humorous anecdote augmenting a printed account of Johnson stating that a dish of peas might appear charming, to a pig, to which Mrs. Piozzi adds "& then says Lady Cotton, pray Dr. Johnson give me leave to send you a few more of them HLP." (p. 63). "Doctor [Thomas] Warton" is identified (p. 231) and a correction of capilization occurs at p. 296. William Augustus Conway, an actor and probably an illegitimate son of the daughter of a farmer and Lord William Conway, was barely thirty when he became a close friend of Mrs. Piozzi during the two last years of her life, in Bath. During an American tour he drowned of the coast of Charleston, aged thirty-nine.
