Chevraeana, ou divers pensées d'histoire, de critique, d'erudition et de morale. Recueillies & publiées par Mr. Chevreau. Suivant la copie de Paris.
Amsterdam: Thomas Lombrail, 1700. 2 vols. 12mo (158 x 92 mm.). Contemporary calf, worn, upper cover of vol. II detached; some dampstaining to lower portions of vol. II, some old handling stains and extreme blank margins browned, lacks half-titles. In modern cloth clamshell case. Letterpress titles printed in red and black. hester lynch thrale piozzi's copy of one of her collection of 31 titles of "ana." Annotated in ink on more than 120 pages of text for a total of almost 700 lines of varying breadth, plus a page of 17 lines of manuscript tipped in at front of vol. II, together with other marginal marks, such as pointers, crosses, hatchings, etc., in ink and in pencil. The naming of Mrs. Thrale's celebrated six-volume manuscript journal Thraliana was based upon her own collecting of anecdotes, knowledge and observations. "Mrs. Thrale was beginning an English ana, undoubtedly modelled after the French anas with which she was familiar, and which she extravagantly liked, as she herself revealed in 1780 when she wrote: 'I talk of nothing but French Literature--these Anas have seized me so.' She quotes them frequently through all the volumes of the Thraliana, and, with the assistance of her friend [William] Seward, she formed a collection of them amounting to thirty-one titles." (Balderston in Thraliana , p. xi, and see also p. 467, note 3 for a list of the ana titles in the Thrale library sale catalogue, Manchester, 17 September 1823 and an additional list from her manuscript catalogue of books at Brynbella). Piozzi returned to this book on a number of occasions, to judge by entries dated 1801, 1802 and later. Her annotations are particularly wide ranging in subject and her scholarship is ever on display. Her interest in the derivation and uses of words, and names, for example: "The Scots are fond of the Word Amenity in writing & conversation but few English use it." (I, p. 58); "Semiramis is Samram…the Dove…" (I, p. 336) and "Shushan or Susan [underlined] is the Lily…" (II, p. 259), Susan being the name of one of her daughters. Her rewriting of a Latin epigram by Ausonius into a better French translation than Chevreau's is indeed "better done, & neater" (I, p. 270). Sophia Streatfeild is noted (II, p. 21) and Baretti (II, p. 190). Commenting on the lines "Les Moscovites aiment le Vin avec une espece de fureur…", she notes "all cold Countries drink & all hot ones practice Lewdness. When the latter obtains in Scotland & Russia 'tis out of its Place, as Whiskey wd. be at Malta or Messina…& surely to sin without [underlined] temptation is worse than to sin with. it [underlined]." (II, 215-216). Provenance: 1. Hester Lynch Thrale Piozzi (her second sale, Manchester 17 September 1823, lot 72) to 2. Whittell, 6s.-6d. 3. W.J. Atkinson, signature in each volume (? mid 19th century) 4. J.R. Correll, pencil inscription, 10 February 1951, probably bought from Geo. A. Poynder, bookseller of Reading whose ticket is in vol. I. 5. From Chistopher Edwards, 1995
