Scaligerana ou bons mots, recontres agréables et remarques judicieuses & sçavantes…avec des notes de Mr. Le Fevre, & de Mr. de Colomies. Le tout disposé par ordre alphabetique en cette nouvelle edition.
Cologne:***, 1695.12mo (156 x 93 mm.). Engraved frontispiece, letterpress title printed in red and black.Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine gilt in six compartments, red morocco gilt label in one compartment. Condition: upper joint cracked, bottom of backstrip slightly defective. Provenance : Hester Lynch Thrale Piozzi (her second sale, Manchester, 17 September 1823); Maggs 1038/405 (1983, £420) hester lynch thrale piozzi's copy of one of her collection of 31 titles of "ana" . Signed "H L Thrale" on a flyleaf and annotated in ink on more than 70 pages of text for a total of over 280 lines of varying breadth, together with many other marginal marks, such as crosses and small signs, in ink and in pencil. Inscribed inside front cover "Bot. at Sale of Mrs. Piozzi's Books--MSS remarks are by Mrs. Piozzi." in an early 19th-century hand [probably 1823]. As well as the majority of Mrs. Thrales comments here, which are undated but which presumably were made ca. 1780 when the "ana" collection was being formed, there are two instances (pp. 211 and 235) where her remarks are dated 1802. Single words and names in the text are developed by her, for example: "Sophy does not Grammatically speaking, mean Reform'd…Sophia. They were Sophies then after that" (p. 3), showing perhaps a clear example of her jealousy of Sophia Streatfeild who charmed Mr. Thrale." The true Original Diana that fell down from Jupiter was a mere Conical Stone…" (p. 124). "What Diodati was it yt. published the Italian Bible? He was of Lucca" (p. 126). She brings divorce from the Greek & Roman era to 18th-century Scotland: "The Scotch Ladies divorce their Husbands to this day either for Adultery, or Desertion." (p. 127). Commenting on the gender of Pope John VIII: "…D'Eon--a man who lived & died in Women's Clothes quite unsuspected by all of us in my own Time. H.L.P. 1802" (p. 211). The satires of Juvenal occasion her remark "why does Roew say he wrote his Jane Shore in Shakespear's style?…" (p. 223). Elsewhere there are abundant terse exclamations such as "curious", "o dear o dear" and "nonsense" and she not impressed by Scaliger's natural history: "I thought we all knew what a Dromedary was--Jews & Gentiles too." (p. 130) and "Scaliger was a wretched Naturalyst indeed." (p. 26).
