PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista (1720-1778). Varie Vedute di Roma Antica e Moderna (Wilton-Ely 51-101) the complete book of comprising 51 etchings by Piranesi and 43 etchings by P. Anesi, J. L. Legeay, F. P. Duflos and J.C. Bellicard, including the title by Anesi, circa 1741-1748, a very fine, early set of this rare series, published by Fausto Amidei, Rome, title dated 1748, but printed some time after 1750, First Edition according to Hind, watermark Fleur-de-Lys in Double Circle with Pendant Initial (apparently not in Robison), with wide margins, a few minor stains, generally in very good condition, in contemporary Italian vellum Plates: 5 1/8 x 7 5/8 in. (128 x 193 mm.) Sheets: 9 x 14 1/4 in. (236 x 362 mm.) Overall: 14 x 9 in. (370 x 244 mm.) Provenance : Anthony Lefroy, with his bookplate. Acquired from F. & G. Staack, 1963. While Hind considered the 1748 edition as the first edition, Andrew Robison has since traced at least two copies of an earlier edition, published in 1745.
