PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista (1720-1778) Vedute di Roma (Hind 1-12, 14-60) the book with 59 etchings including title, 1748-61, lacking one plate (H. 13), fine, early impressions printed in dark sepia, Hindi's First Edition, Third Issue, published by Piranesi in Rome, presumably in 1761 (the volume contains no plates etched later than 1761), the plates with the artist's address and the price (usually Hind's second, third or fourth state), watermarks Fleur-de-Lys in Double Circle (R. 34, dated 1760- mid 1760s; and R. 37, dated 1760- mid 1770s), with margins, some minor scattered foxing, H. 14 with a short tear in the lower margin, generally in very good condition, with marbled sheet edges, modern half calf, old boards, with the old lettering-piece on cover Overall: 21½ x 16 3/8 in. (545 x 415 mm.) Sheets: 21 x 30¼ in. (535 x 770 mm.) Provenance: George Ticknor (1791-1871), Boston, with his bookplate. Boston Public Library, given by the heirs of the above on November 13, 1896, with the Boston Public Library bookplate and duplicate and deaccession stamp. Mrs. F. Murray Crane (1873-1972), Massachusetts and New York. Acquired from John Fleming in 1978.
