PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista (1720-1778) Della Magnificenza ed Architettura de' Romani (Wilton-Ely 753-798) the complete book with 46 etchings including two title pages, frontispiece, vignettes and initials, 1761, with text and indices in Latin and Italian; bound with Osservazioni di Gio. Battista Piranesi sopra la lettre de M. Mariette; , Parere su l'Architettura and Della Introduzione e del Progresso delle Belle Arte in Europa ne' Tempi antichi (W.-E. 799-814), complete with 16 etchings including vignettes, 1765; all published in Rome, watermarks Fleur-de-Lys in Double Circle (R. 39 or similliar, dated late 1760-90's), with margins, very good condition, the three works bound together in contemporary Italian vellum gilt, as issued Overall: 23 x 17 1/4 in. (582 x 440 mm.) Sheets: 22 1/2 x 16 3/4 in. (567 x 430 mm.) Provenance : Probably Thomas Percy Bishop of Dromore (1729-1811). Alexander Du Pre, 2nd Earl of Caledon (1777-1839), with his bookplate. Acquired from William Schab, 1984. According to a pencil note by Andrew Robison, the present copy is from the first complete edition of these three polemical tracts by Piranesi claiming the superiority of Ancient Roman art over that of Greece, printed in Rome around 1769.
