PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista (1720-1778). [ Opera , an extensive composite set in contemporary editions.] Rome: G.B. Piranesi [and others], 1756-before 1778. 9 volumes, 2° (535 x 400mm). (Some scattered spotting throughout, mostly light and marginal but sometimes heavier and in the plates.) Contemporary calf, spines gilt in compartments with raised bands, black morocco labels gilt, sides gilt with triple fillet borders and corner fleurons, marbled edges (many joints split, two boards detached, spines worn, some labels lacking, some sides scuffed, extremities rubbed). Provenance : Hugh Lupus, 1st Duke of Westminster (1825-1899; bookplate). Volumes 1-4: Le Antichità romane . Rome: Bouchard and Gravier, 1756. Together 219 plates on strong laid paper, numbered in the engraving in Roman numerals. I: Engraved frontispiece portrait of Piranesi, and 45 plates including the etched double-page dedication [second state] and one un-numbered plate; II: 63 engraved plates including the title and engraved index plate; III: 54 engraved plates including the title; IV: 57 engraved plates including the title.
