Late-18th century red straight-grained morocco gilt, covers with outer single fillet border, enclosing an inner single-fillet rectangle the outline broken by semi-circular rules, these semi-circles intersected by the corners of a large single fillet lozenge, corners marked with small star tool, spine in six compartments with double-raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with single flower-head tool, gilt turn-ins, g.e. Provenance : William Beckford (pencilled note); Henry J.B. Clements (armorial bookplate). THEOPHRASTUS (c.371-c.287 B.C.). [ Characteres ], in Greek. Edited by John Wilkes. London: John Nichols 1790. Small 4 (202 x 161mm). Contemporary red straight-grained morocco gilt, single fillet borders on covers, the flat spine divided into six sections, lettered in the second, the others with styllised flower-head tool, gilt turn-ins, g.e.
