PLUTARCHUS (ca.45-ca.120). Vite di Plutarco cheroneo de gli huomini illustri Greci et Romani , translated by Lodovico Domenichi. Venice: Felice Valgrisi, 1582. 3 volumes, 4° (216 x 154mm). French red morocco gilt with the ARMS OF MADAME DE POMPADOUR [Olivier 2399, fer 1, smaller variant] on covers, gilt spine with pomegranate at centre of compartments, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (very slight scuffing to front cover of vols. II and III), modern red morocco-backed box. Provenance : Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, marquise de Pompadour (1721-1764, binding, Versailles booklabel); Croyatin (inscription in vol.III); Thomas Clark bookseller at Edinburgh (ticket). A fine set BOUND FOR MADAME DE POMPADOUR and an uncommon edition of Domenichi's translation of Plutarch, not in Adams or the British Library, where Valgrisi's first imprints date from 1583. (3)
