LAUDER, WILLIAM COLIN. A Voyage Round the World, in the Years 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1788, Performed in the King George, Commanded by Captain Portlock; and the Queen Charlotte, Commanded by Captain Dixon; under the Direction of the Incorporated Society for the Advancement of the Fur Trade. London: for R. Randal, 1789. [6], 144, 150-1 pp. Frontispiece engraving. 8vo (198 x 124 mm). Early half speckled sheep over marbled boards. Small corner torn from and penned authorial identification to title, some light spots mainly to preliminary and final leaves, joints cracked, light shelfwear. First edition of one of the great rarities of Pacific exploration. The work is generally attributed to Lauder, who served as the ship's surgeon aboard the Queen Charlotte, as the preface is signed "C.L." The account follows the fur trading expedition to the northwest coast of America including much in Alaska and also material on Hawaii with visits to Kealakekua Bay and the island of Kauai.
