Edwin Garnet Riley (African American, 1880-1966), a folk art portrait after the oft reproduced photograph from 1859, with added landscape and housed in oval, stenciled frame; 32.75 x 27.5 in. (sight), 40 x 35 in. Edwin Riley, Pittsburgh native, initially was engaged in Social Service work but was somewhat of a Renaissance man in his extracurriculars. Working as an author, poet and painter, Riley's articles were published regularly in the Pittsburgh Press. Most of Riley's literary work was abolitionist in nature, and he self-published several pamphlets and books, including A Tribute to John Brown a book included with this painting. An excerpt from A Tribute - Men have called him a fanatic and perhaps he was. Any individual who scorns the hypocrisy of his age and follows in the path of truth - who rears his temple in the unclouded clime of the ideal, is usually thought to be a fanatic. Yet, the fruits of any civilization and the progress of mankind, are but the result of fanatical intent. A photograph of the artist's son standing before the painting, a biography of Riley from The History of Titusville, and a pair of signed books published by Riley, including A Tribute to John Brown are included with this lot. An interesting painting and group of material from an individual influenced heavily by and on the fringes of movements such as the Harlem Renaissance.
