Lot of 27 portraits, consisting of 6 sixth plate daguerreotypes, 6 ninth plate daguerreotypes, 3 quarter plate ambrotypes, 4 sixth plate ambrotypes, 2 ninth plate ambrotypes, and 6 ninth plate tintypes, housed under intricately patterned brass mats. Grouping includes two quarter plate ambrotypes of a man and woman housed in a "Scarce" Basket of Fruit case [Berg 2-6] and under the Four Shields mat [Berg Fig. 59]. Also with a second patriotic example, 76 Union 61 [Fig. 58], framing a daguerreotype of a man with a wispy mustache and goatee. Some mats feature architectural elements, including Pillars [Fig. 69] and Cupid with Pillars [Fig. 70, two examples], while others have elaborate designs with fruits and flowers. Rare mat designs include a figural example, with two profile portraits of a woman wearing a crown in the top corners, and Windsor Castle in the two bottom corners [Fig. 65], as well a lovely floral mat with birds in the four corners [Fig. 83], framing a sixth plate daguerreotype of of a young man identified as John M. Hathaway. Exterior case designs of note include Lady with Falcon 1 [1-112], Game of Chess 3 [1-125], Branch with Acorns [2-130], Flowers, Leaves, and Cones [2-96], and a "Very Rare" leather case with applied gesso [6-4]. Lot includes a ninth plate postmortem ambrotype of a young boy identified as Harry Melvin Kimball, with card reading, "aged 15 months 8 days / death / taken after death."
