Whitley Date: 1819 Description: 4 volumes. 155 engraved plates. (8vo) 23.5x14 cm (9¼x5½") later full black calf, elaborated tooled in blind on covers, with decorative gilt border, spines gilt, all edges gilt. First Edition in book form. Originally issued in parts from 1790 to 1795, this collection of portraits of remarkable individuals with brief biographies was the major work of printseller James Caulfield. According to the DNB, Caulfield's specialty was "prints illustrating Granger's twelfth class of people--'such as lived to a great age, deformed persons, convicts, &c.' --whose portraits were very often the hardest to come by." Armorial bookplates of Robert Austen and Robert Uniacke Penrose Fitz-Gerald. Lot Amendments Condition: Just light wear, old repairs to a few hinges; light foxing; very good. Item number: 282673a
