POST MEDIEVAL 'ABRAHAM SACRIFICING ISAAC' PLAQUE WITH HEBREW INSCRIPTION Late 18th-early 19th century AD A thin leaf of ivory curving from the shape of the original tusk and squared at either end, finely painted with a scene entitled, in Hebrew, 'Akeda Yitzchak' (The Binding of Isaac) showing Abraham in a rocky and wooded landscape, throwing away a dagger and standing before an altar on which his son Isaac kneels, with hands tied behind his back; above both figures is an angel who points to a goat at the bottom lower right of the scene; next to the goat is a red coloured garment and a pot with flames coming out of the top; to the bottom of the scene is a Hebrew inscription from Genesis (Bereshit) 22.12 (Lay not thy hand upon the boy, neither do thou any thing unto him); an artist signature 'Karbasi' is below; of Middle Eastern workmanship. 55 grams, 29cm (11 1/2"). Very fine condition. Rare. Provenance Property of an American collector; acquired Europe 1970s-1990s.
