POTTER, BEATRIX. A collection of papers relating to the tenancy of The Castle, commencing Nov. 12th 1922 through National Trust supervision in 1957 (actually continuing until the early 1970s), including 4 notes (approximately 6 pages) in Potter's hand, related notes, papers, photographs, etc. 1922-57. Together 8 items, various sizes. Beatrix bought the Castle Farm, in Near Sawrey, in 1909, and its cottage was her primary place of residence from the late 1920s through the remainder of her life. She died there on the night of 22 December, 1943. This group of papers initially relates to the period when the cottage next-door called "The Castle" was being let to Cecily Mills, the friend of Margaret (Daisy) Hammond, the niece of Beatrix's first governess (see also lots #). Includes: One autograph note by Potter (unsigned), stating the initial term of tenancy, for a period of six months, outlining her obligations as landlord and that for which the tenant is to be responsible: "Rent at the rate of #17 a year with a certain amount of furniture and the stove. Tenant pays rates!" One page, 4to. Another autograph note by Potter (unsigned), inventorying the contents of the Cottage. 2 pages, 4to, written on recto and verso. With an autograph note from the tenant [Miss Cecily Mills] in which she has listed some queries as to what she needs to bring along to the house ("Sheets, Blanket, China Plate, Cooking Utensils..."), asking whether she can supply coal and dairy products, and what the exact address for forwarding luggage, etc.--all of which Potter has written in an answer for, in addition she lists the names of local dependable tradesmen that can by relied upon during their stay (i.e. Baker, Grocer, Butcher, etc.). One page, small 8vo, written on recto and verso. With an autograph note in pencil (unsigned) by Potter, listing some of the furnishings to be found in "The Castle." 2 pages, 12mo, written on recto and verso. "I have a vallance belonging to 4 post-bed. The bird tapestry is for under the chain rail in the oak room at Hill Top..." [With:] A National Trust partly printed receipt to Miss Mills, covering rent of 15 Guineas for the Castle and part garden (to 12/5/50). 16 May 1950. One page, oblong 8vo, accomplished in ink. And a typed letter signed from C.H.D. Acland to Miss Mills, informing her that the current rent of #30 per year is no longer permissible and that the rent was to be raised to #80 per annum. 8 November 1957. One page, 4to, on National Trust letterhead. [Together with:] Two related photographs (one of The Castle, taken during the time Miss Potter was renting the property directly; and one which may be of Cecily Mills in the garden at The Castle).
