Proof sheets of [a]1-2, [a]4, b-h 4 [leaf g1 in two states] and i1-3 [i.e. all of the published text save the half-title leaf]. Woodcut title vignette. (Occasional spotting, marking or browning.) Later morocco-backed boards, lettered in gilt on the spine. PROOF COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, EXTENSIVELY CORRECTED BY POUND AND ELIZABETH YEATS. Cf. Gallup Pound (1983) B15. E. POUND (editor). Passages from the Letters of John Butler Yeats . Churchtown, Dundrum: The Cuala Press, 1917. 8° (210 x 144mm). Printed in red and black. Woodcut title vignette. Original cloth-backed boards by Galwey & Co, Dublin, letterpress spine label (corners slightly bumped, spine a little darkened, spine label slightly chipped). Provenance : traces of bleached ownership signature on flyleaf--Bow Windows Bookshop, Lewes (loosely-inserted bookseller's invoice, dated 23 October 1974). FIRST EDITION, ONE OF 400 COPIES, SIGNED BY W.B. YEATS. Gallup Pound (1983) B15. CORRECTED PROOF COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION WITH THE FIRST EDITION SIGNED BY W.B. YEATS. Passages from the Letters was a selection from the letters of the artist John Butler Yeats (1839-1922) to his son W.B. Yeats made by Pound, and was printed by Elizabeth Corbet Yeats' Cuala Press. Pound's manuscript correction and amendments include the addition of the epigraph, the correction of the title from 'Extracts of the Letters' to 'Passages from the Letters' on both the title and the colophon, amendments to his 'Editor's Foreword', and corrections of both layout and text throughout; he has also marked the first leaf 'REVISE. , E.P.' and has intialled and dated the colophon 'E.P. , 18-1-'17' (the volume was issued in May 1917). Elizabeth Yeats' annotations relate to the typography, but also to the text: on pp.[1] and 4 she has added 'too much cut' besides passages where editorial excisions have diminished the sense of the text, noting on the first leaf that she has marked some mistakes and asking for the proof to be returned, signing her notes 'E.C. Yeats'. (2)
