POUND, Ezra. Personae . London: Chiswick Press for Elkin Mathews, 1909. 8° (172 x 110mm). Woodcut publisher's device in red on title. 8-page publisher's catalogue of the 'Vigo Cabinet' and 'Satchel' series bound in at the end. (Scattered light spotting.) Original dark brown boards [first state of binding], lettered in gilt on the upper board and spine [the spine titling measuring c.20mm in height] (extremities very lightly rubbed and bumped, spine slightly cocked). Provenance : N.P., 3 February 1910 (dated monogram on front free endpaper). FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE, WITH CATALOGUE NOT CALLED FOR BY GALLUP, which is the same as that bound into Exultations . 1,000 sheets of Personae were printed (of which up to 500 were re-issued in 1913, vide infra ). Gallup Pound (1983) A3a. E. POUND. Exultations . London: Chiswick Press for Elkin Mathews, 1909. 8° (172 x 110mm). Woodcut publisher's device in red on title. 2-page publisher's advertisement for Personae and 8-page publisher's catalogue of the 'Vigo Cabinet' and 'Satchel' series bound in at the end. (Occasional spotting.) Original dark red boards, lettered in gilt on the upper board ['Exultations , Ezra Pound'] and on the spine (spine darkened, a little rubbed and chipped at extremities, block split). FIRST EDITION, possibly later binding. 1,000 sheets of Exultations were printed, of which up to 500 were re-issued in 1913 ( vide infra ). Gallup Pound (1983) A4a. E. POUND. Provença . Boston: The University Press for Small, Maynard and Company, 1910. 8° (172 x 109mm). (Some light marginal browning and occasional light marking.) Original tan boards, lettered in black on the upper board and brown on the spine [with title measuring 90mm, the book block and boards 17mm thick] (boards partially darkened and lightly marked, extremities slightly rubbed and chipped, block split). Provenance : G.H. Parker (inscription on upper pastedown). FIRST EDITION, VARIANT BINDING NOT NOTED BY GALLUP. Provença was formed of poems selected from both Personae and Exultations , augmented with poems from the as-yet unpublished Canzoni . Gallup states that 'probably 200 copies' were printed of this edition; this copy shares some characteristics of the first issue binding, but with variants and retains the final letter of the word 'Laudantes' on pp.53 and 55. Gallup Pound (1983) A6a. E. POUND. Personae & Exultations . London: Chiswick Press for Elkin Mathews, 1913. 8° (173 x 108mm). Woodcut publisher's device in red on title. 2-page publisher's advertisement for Personae and 8-page publisher's catalogue of the 'Vigo Cabinet' and 'Satchel' series bound in at the end. Original dark-brown boards, lettered in gilt on the upper board and spine. FIRST EDITION. This volume was formed of the sheets of the first editions of Personae and Exultations , with the titles cancelled and a new half-title and title, of which 500 sets were printed; however, 'the rare occurrence of the composite volume in comparison with its separate components indicates that fewer than the intended number [i.e. 500] were actually issued' (Gallup). Gallup Pound (1983) A3b/A4b. (4)
