PRAYERS AND DEVOTIONS, in Latin and German, MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Germany, mid-14th century] 110 x 72mm., 220 leaves including modern replacement title-leaf plus 2 medieval flyleaves, in 34 gatherings mostly of 8 [lacking at least 30 leaves], 12 lines ruled in brown, justification 54 x 27mm., written in black ink in a regular gothic textura, rubrics in red, one- and two-line initials alternately red and blue, three-line initials red or blue with flourishing of lilac, sometimes touched with green, contemporary blind-stamped brown calf over wooden boards, brass clasps (rebacked). PROVENANCE: 1). PRAYERS IN GERMAN added in a 15th-century bookhand on folio 71r & v, and in a 15th-century informal hand on front flyleaf. 2). Servio Jacobo Rutsheim, pastor in Lommersum, written in a 16th-century cursive hand inside upper cover. Lommersum is a parish in the diocese of Cologne. TEXT: A collection of devotions on the Passion of Christ, Prayers to the Virgin, various indulgenced prayers, the Litany and Memorials to saints. The replacement title-leaf reads Centum meditationes passionis domini nostri Jhesu Christi . A letter of 16 May 1962 from Dr. Steiger, librarian of the City and University library of Berne attributes the text to Henricus Suso, but the Centum Meditationes do not appear to be Suso's.
