The President arranges a meeting with Tucker and regrets that they could not meet previously due to "the incessant pressure upon me." -- HAYES, Rutherford B. Autograph note as President, to Tucker, [Washington], "28th", n.m., n.y. 1 card, 2 3/16 x 3½ in., "Executive Mansion" envelope. [With:] TUCKER, Beverley. Draft ALS, n.p., n.d. 1 p., 4to . Responding to Tucker's request that the President meet with him and Confederate General Joseph Johnston to discuss a matter about which Virginians "feel deeply interested," Hayes writes: "Will be glad to meet you & Gen J at noon tomorrow." -- PIERCE, Franklin. ALS ("Franklin Pierce") to Tucker, Oxford, 25 July 1859. 2¼ pp., 8vo . From his post-administration tour of Europe, Pierce regrets that he cannot accept Tucker's invitation: "We are passing a few days in this interesting city...We must...be determined and see as much as we can of the North of England in the remaining three weeks." -- GARFIELD, James. ALS ("J.A.Garfield") to Tucker, [Washington, c. 1880]. 1 p., 8vo . Congressman Garfield regrets he cannot accept an invitation as "the only 'effervescence' I am permitted to partake of at present is the 'stale, flat and unprofitable' foam of politics in the House. There are so many things up and coming up, that I must stay by." -- HAYES, Rutherford B. ALS ("R.B. Hayes") to Tucker, Spiegel Grove, [OH.], 15 April 1881. 1 p., 8vo . Just over a month after leaving the White House, Hayes informs Tucker that he will aid him in obtaining the "desired footing" with President Garfield. -- [GARFIELD, James].
