'Sir James Lamont of Knockdow, Argyll, Steam yacht, Diana, in the middle distance'. Sir James Lamont M.P. & Deputy Lieut for Co. Bute FGS & FRGS, author of 'Seasons with the Seahorses' and this Expedition, 1876". Sir James Lamont, Bt. (1828-1913) was a Scottish explorer, particularly known for his travels in the Arctic; he also travelled to Africa and the West Indies. In 1869 he built the Diana, a three-masted Schooner of 251 tons, with auxiliary steam, specially designed for Arctic travel, and in that year and the two following years he made further expeditions to the Polar seas. An account of these voyages appeared in 1876 under the title of 'Yatching in the Artic Seas'. (1)
