Three works in one volume. 19x12 cm (7½x4¾"), period half sheep and boards. Three works from notable Colonial printers. Benjamin Franklin of course, is synonymous with early American printing, as well as scientific achievement, patriotic zeal, and punctual mail delivery. Christopher Sower (or Sauer) the younger followed in his father's footsteps, printing in his native German as well as adopted English. William Dunlap was at one time a partner of Franklin in the printing trade, and trained his nephew John, who in turn is remembered for his printing of the Declaration of Independence in broadside form. Presentation inscription from the author of the third (Dunlap) work, on the title page of the first (Franklin) work, "Anthony Benezet's given to Jonathan Mifflin 1764." Mifflin's ownership signature and inscription on the front free endpaper. Comprises: An extract from a treatise by William Law M.A. called The spirit of prayer, or, The soul rising out of the vanity of time into the riches of eternity... 47 pp. Philadelphia: Printed by B. Franklin, and D. Hall, 1760. Hartley, Thomas. A discourse on mistakes concerning religion, enthusiasm, experiences, &c. 168 pp. Germantown: Christopher Sower, 1759. Benezet, Anthony. A short account of that part of Africa, inhabited by the Negroes. With respect to the fertility of the country; the good disposition of many of the natives, and the manner by which the slave trade is carried on. Extracted from divers authors, in order to shew the iniquity of that trade, and the falsity of the arguments usually advanced in its vindication... 80 pp. Philadelphia: Printed by W. Dunlap, 1762.
