Prints.- Vertue (George) A Description of the Works of the Ingenious Delineator and Engraver Wenceslaus Hollar .., second edition, title with engraved portrait vignette, engraved plate, 2 head-pieces and tail-piece, light spotting, John Leigh Philips's copy with his inscription dated 1805 to front free endpaper, his bookplate, pencil annotations to text and ink manuscript notes tipped in at beginning, contemporary russia, rebacked, rubbed, corners worn, small 4to, for William Bathoe, 1759. ⁂ John Leigh Philips (1761-1814), manufacturer of Manchester, collector, friend of the author & collector William Roscoe of Liverpool and of the artist Joseph Wright of Derby. Philips primarily collected natural history specimens and these were bought after his death for over £5000, later forming the basis of the Manchester Museum. The tipped-in notes are a list of "the rarest & most esteemed of Hollar's portraits at Mr Ayton's sale 1795...".
