Strassburg: Johann Schott, 1532. 2 works in one volume, 2° (308 x 200mm). Title within ornamental woodcut border, numerous woodcuts in text of which 8 full-page, woodcut initials. (Browning and occasional spotting.) Modern red morocco, sides panelled in blind (spine faded). Provenance : contemporary annotations. FIRST EDITIONS. The Rerum Medicarum is divided into four books: the first treats of external diseases, the second of internal, the third of female diseases, and the fourth of physiology. The author, in his preface, speaks against the learned and worthy disputes physicians held at the bedside of the patient, and against reliance on foreign remedies in preference indigenous ones. The second work, by Abu al-Kasim Khalaf Ibn Al-Abbas, commonly known as Albucasis, is THE SINGLE PURELY SURGICAL WORK LEFT US BY THE ARAB WORLD. The full-page woodcuts of surgical instruments by Hans Waechtlin made their first appearance in Gersdorff, Feldtbuch der Wundartzney (Strassburg 1517). RARE: only two copies recorded on ABPC online.
