[Project Mercury] Birth of NASA: NASA’s founding, US President Eisenhower visiting Cape Canaveral for the first time. Charles Rogers, 10 February 1960. Printed 1960. Vintage gelatin silver print on fiber-based paper [NASA / US Air Force image PL-60–51250]. 20.3×25.4cm (8×10 in), with NASA / US Air Force caption numbered “PL-60–51250” and dated “2–10-1960” on the verso (NASA / US Air Force, RCA photo lab., Patrick AFB, Florida). On July 29, 1958, President Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 establishing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). NASA began operations on October 1, 1958. Project Mercury, the first human spaceflight program of the United States, was publicly announced on December 17. Originally called Project Astronaut, President Dwight Eisenhower felt that gave too much attention to the pilot. Instead, the name Mercury was chosen from classical mythology.
