Property from the Collection of David and Louise CarterGiulio RomanoRome 1499 - 1546 MantuaTwo Putti on the Back of an Elephant, Study for a Stucco Medallion in the West Lunette on the Vault of the Camera delle Aquile, Palazzo Te Pen and brown ink over traces of black chalk;bears inscription in pencil, verso: da cabinet Nic. Lanier--d. Crozat--P.J. Mariette (presumably transcribed from Mariette's mount when the drawing was remounted for Lawrence); made up around the edges by Mariette159 by 169 mm; 6 ¼ by 6 ⅝ inCondition reportHinge mounted to a modern cream mount. The sheet has been made up around the edges, presumably by Mariette. There is some slight toning to the sheet and scattered light brown staining. There are some very old, small repaired tears to the lower edge of the sheet and what appears to be the remains of an old vertical fold line. The penwork remains in reasonably good condition throughout with the drawing completely legible. Sold in a modern giltwood frame.
