Property from the Daniel Snyder Collection, Owner of the Washington Redskins 1960 PORSCHE 356B ROADSTER Chassis No. 86850 Engine No. 600 123 Signal red with tan leather interior and black soft top Engine: four cylinder, pushrod, air-cooled, twin Zenith carburetors, 1,582cc, 60bhp at 4,500rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: independent front and rear; Brakes: four wheel drum. Left hand drive. When the Porsche 356 was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the autumn of 1955, the motoring press responded to it with a positive and strong reaction. An article on the sporty new car published in Autocar raved, 'to drive a Porsche is to experience a new form of motoring, so refreshingly different is it from the usual run of vehicles.' The reaction was consistent across the board and the little cars gained themselves a loyal following of their own. Over the course of the next several years, Porsche altered the body design only minimally, and instead they offered a variety of power plants. However, in November 1959 they did introduce the new 356B that had the T-5 body featuring higher bumpers and slightly raised headlights. The interior was also revised with split seatbacks allowing extra luggage room as required. The predecessor to the Speedster, the Roadster was more luxurious, with a taller windscreen and wind-up windows, all ensuring a comfortable driving environment. The factory Kardex for this Porsche confirms that it is a 1960 356 Roadster with matching numbers. The car is an original California model that was first delivered with Ruby red paintwork and leatherette trim that has since been upgraded to tan leather trim. The Porsche is also an original floorpan car that has been beautifully restored to its present, showroom condition with unmarked bodywork and a superb paint finish, now in Porsche Signal red which was a factory color. The interior has been completely retrimmed throughout with tan leather upholstery, correct German carpets and it is also fitted with the optional special order wishbone-bracket seats. It also sports a VDM Carrera wooden steering wheel that is a real treat for the driver. The engine and transmission have been rebuilt, and with the type 741 transmission and improved brakes, the 356Bs are a delight to drive. They have a deserved reputation for reliability and longevity. This example has been extremely well restored and is presented ready to be enjoyed. Recently driven by a Christie's specialist, this 356 Roadster runs as good as it looks. Starts right up, shifts smoothly through all of the gears, and most importantly, is an outright joy to drive. It comes with a factory certificate of authenticity and original tools and books. Having resided in Mr. Snyder's care since his purchase from Christie's in August 2001, the Porsche has been treated to consistent maintenance and regular exercise. Christie's is pleased to offer this high quality example awaiting a new home.
