Left hand drive. In the late 1950s Mercedes-Benz found itself with a fine lineup of modern, powerful engines but a somewhat dated range of bodystyles. This shortcoming was answered in part by the introduction of the new 220 Series at the Frankfurt Show. The second generation 220 had a completely new and elegant bodywork, longer, wider and lower than before. Flanking the traditional Mercedes grill were vertically stacked headlights, contoured into fenders that swept back into an angular tail. As an update to the 300 series of Mercedes-Benz, it was decided that in 1961 the 300SE should be introduced utilizing the body from the 22SEb. With an engine inherited from the 300Sc and 300SL, the car was designed for the same market as the 300S and 300Sc, aimed, not at the rich sportscar purchaser of the 1950s, but at the more sedate and practical buyer who wanted a large grand touring car with air suspension, large trunk, plenty of leg room, and room for three passengers in the rear. This particular example is fitted with the rare and desirable four speed manual transmission. The original tan leather interior is still intact but shows some wear on the driver's side seat. The odometer reads just over 60,000 miles.
