British-built 1937 Ford V8s are relatively rare, for Dagenham only produced 4,331 V8-78 cars of all types in a production run which lasted from 25 January 1937 until 10 June 1938. This well-presented “Woodie” – a relatively recent purchase by the Lips Collection, which acquired it in late 1996 - represents the top of Ford-Britain’s 1937 range, since it sold new for £265 while the basic V8 saloon cost just £240. The versatile wood-bodied Utility Car was popular in Britain as a shooting brake for large estates. It was, claimed Ford’s publicity material, “a serviceable, sturdy type of car with large section tyres and the special Ford transverse suspension system, giving fine performance and riding comfort. Ideal for the country house for shooting parties, sight-seeing trips, station work, servants’ use, etc, it has comfortable accommodation for seven in addition to the driver and an abundance of luggage space.” Though a High Court ruling during 1937 supposedly restricted utility-bodied cars to a top speed of 30 mph, few enthusiastic owners heeded it, for the Ford V8 Woodie offered superior performance to many contemporary sports cars, with a top speed in the region of 85mph. Launched in Britain in January 1937, the ‘split-screen’ Ford V8-78 had daringly-streamlined styling inspired by its upmarket cousin, the Lincoln-Zephyr, and was perhaps the most handsome of all the immortal Ford V8 line. The handsome maple framed and birch panelled bodywork of the Woodie was the icing on the cake. This particular example was originally registered to Doris Charrington of West Sussex on 15 April 1937. With a recorded mileage of some 64,275 miles, this car is in very original condition, with the correct wooden panelling on the inner sides of the doors. It is finished in the standard Autumn Brown livery. There are the correct three rows of seats, with the rear rows retaining the original beige leather upholstery, while the front bench seat has been re-covered. The covered spare wheel is correctly mounted on the tailgate and the car is fitted with a towbar for a camping trailer. The wheels are fitted with whitewall tyres; one of the hubcaps was missing when the car was inspected but may have been located by the time of the sale. The car currently carries the old Dutch registration ‘L 4599’ but comes with a copy of the old-style British logbook for its 1937 West Sussex index ‘CPX 743’, which should help with the recovery of the original registration.
