(195x140 mm). 282, [1] pages. The lower margin of the first leaves somewhat waterstained; light foxing. Original editorial wrappers, a few minor wears. Extraordinary dedication copy to Léon Daudet, one of the 30 special copies of the fourth volume of the celebrated Recherche - one of the masterpieces of the twentieth-century literature - which had been printed for Proust on Vélin pur fil. On the recto of the front flyleaf Proust had written in his own hand these lines, which represent a touching declaration of brotherly love: "A mon cher Léon Hommage de tendre et profonde recoinnassance En souvenir du Passé Survivant" The writer and politician Léon Daudet was among his closest friends. He was the elder brother of Proust's lover Lucien Daudet, and played a fundamental role in Proust's private as well as intellectual life. Proust had already dedicated to the incomparable ami Léon the publication of the third volume of the Recherche, entitled Le côte de Guermantes, which includes the following printed dedication in the preliminary leaves: "À Léon Daudet à du Voyage de Shakespeare du Partage de l'enfant de l'Astre noir de Fantômes et vivants du Monde des images de tant de chefs-d'oeuvre à l'incomparable ami en témoignage de reconnaissance et d'admiration".
