Venice: Heirs of Simon Galignani, 1596 - 1594. 2 parts in 1 volume. 4to (220 x 165 mm). 64 full page hand-colored engraved maps heightened with gold and silver engraved by Girolamo Porro woodcut diagrams and initials. Contemporary calf decoratively stamped in blind, all edges gilt and gauffered. Condition: restorations to first few leaves, repair to lower corner of Hh7, old repairs to spine and joints. Provenance: The Wardington Library (booklabel to rear endpaper). first edition of this popular and attractive italian pocket edition of ptolemy, with maps of both the modern and anciant world. The maps in this edition are engraved by Porro after Mercator and Ortelius and the work was edited by the important Italian geographer Giovanni Antonio Magini Nordenskiold Collection 2:223; Shirley, British Library, T.PTOL-12a; Phillips, Atlases 403.
