Purchas his Pilgrimes. In five books, 5 vol., FIRST EDITIONS of volumes 1-4, fourth edition of volume 5 ('Purchas his Pilgrimage', second issue, with dedication to King Charles , additional engraved title (second issue, dated 1625), 7 double-page or folding engraved maps by Renold Elstracke or William Hole after Henry Briggs, Wiliam Smith and others (map of Virginia in volume 4 in Sabin's state 10), 81 smaller engraved maps in the text by or after Hondius and others (volume one with G3 in first issue state, with 'Map of the Christian World' repeat), numerous woodcut illustrations and engravings in the text including the series of Mexican antiquities, with colophon leaf to volume 2 (often lacking) but without blank R4 in volume one, occasional soiling and dampstaining (mainly in margins), about 10 leaves with tears, repairs or rust holes (some loss in a few cases), map of Virginia shaved at foot, many smaller maps trimmed (a few with slight loss of image, World map in volume 5 with folding flap frayed), each volume with the ownership signatures of Capt. Zachary Bag[g]s and Emma Smith, further signatures in volumes 1-2 of Isaac Ward ("Anno domini 1680 March ye 11th Day orphan in Christ Hospitall"), John Drayner ("ye 11th of may anno 1680"), Samuel Burgis, Edward Pages (1683), William Talbot (1688), John Farmar and bookplates of Viscount Mersey, Bignor Park, early ink marginalia in volume one (often cropped), seventeenth century panelled calf, covers with blind-tooled panel borders enclosing gilt lettering "The Gift of Captaine Bags" within ornamental frame, rebacked preserving original spines [STC 20509 and 20508; Sabin 66683-6 and 66682; Streeter I 36], folio (321 x 206mm.), William Stansby for Henrie Fetherstone, 1625-1626
