QUAKER PERSECUTIONS] BISHOP, GEORGE. New-England judged, by the spirit of the Lord. In two parts. First, Containing a brief relatio... . London: printed and sold by T. Sowle, 1703. Second edition. Three parts in one volume, modern calf panelled in period style. 7 1/8 x 4 3/8 inches (18 x 11 cm); irregularly paginated [10], 113, 112-141, 152-498, 212, [14] pp. Some minor toning, but generally a very sound, clean copy (of a book normally found somewhat worn; it was a popular work and received heavy reading). The second edition of Bishop's work, with the appendix, and incorporating as a third part (dated 1702 on the title) John Whiting's Truth and innocency defended; ... In answer to Cotton Mather as issued. Bishop's work was edited by Joseph Grove. This is the most complete early edition of this seminal work on New England religious intolerance and is the first to include Whiting's appendix. This is the variant with T4, the divisional title to "New England judged. The second part", reset, dated 1702 and printed within a double rule border. Howes B481; Sabin 5631; ESTC T103606; Smith Friends' Books 1:283 & 2:918 C
