Lot of 60 glass lantern slides documenting R.C. Moore's 1923 Colorado Expedition, housed in a wooden case, plus a folder filled with supplementary documentation related to the slides with a pamphlet from the State Geological Survey of Kansas by Moore concerning the Oil and Gas Resources of Kansas; a second folder containing copies of Moore's certificates and diplomas; 1937 document appointing Moore a delegate on the Geological Congress with its original seal (17 x 14 in.); certificate from the Young Men's Christian Association at Dennison University presented to Moore in 1913; a certificate in Latin for a doctorate in philosophy(?) from the University of Chicago (18.5 x 14 in.); certificate from the Society of the Sigma Xi, 1914 (21 x 16 in.); certificate from the University of Dennison Literum Fanklinensis written in Latin (21 x 16 in.); and another certificate from Dennison (22.5 x 17.5 in.) In the summer of 1923, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) organized an expedition to make a new map of the Grand Canyon, which included the last portion of the Colorado River. By 1923, only 27 known men traversed the length of Marble and Grand Canyons; only two were scientific. R.C. Moore was a member of the USGS expedition from 1914 until 1949 that endeavored to accurately survey a portion of the River that had not been adequately recorded (http://nationalmap.gov/grandcanyon/index.html). Moore was as an American geologist and paleontologist known for his work on Paleozoic crinoids, bryozoans, and corals. During the expedition he became professor at the University of Kansas. He served as president of the Geological Society of America in 1958 and, in 1970, the National Academy of Sciences awarded him the Mary Clark Thompson Medal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Cecil_Moore). Condition: All are in very good condition.
