In 1971 the project called 121 was launched, relating to the new car that was to offer a body set similarly to that of successful models such as the Simca 1100, ie two-volume with hatchback, but with more modern lines. The first scale models realized depicted a car with a two-volume body similar to the 1100, but with a front bearing the central trapezoidal element similar to the solution already seen on the R6, R16 and R12. This element will disappear during the design phase. The definitive car was unveiled in January 1976 and launched on the market in June of the same year under the name of Renault 14.
