Britannicus fut représenté le 13 décembre 1669 par la troupe de l’Hôtel de Bourgogne que Racine avait préférée à celle de Molière. C’était la première fois que Racine puisait son sujet dans l’histoire romaine, celle de Néron et d’Agrippine. Il y eut seulement sept ou huit représentations, la pièce connaissant un médiocre succès. Par la suite, Britannicus s’imposa comme l’une des meilleures pièces de Racine. Après Andromaque, c’est aujourd’hui la deuxième pièce la plus jouée à la Comédie-Française.
