thread and sinew-sewn with red, purple, and cream quillwork on vamps; soles edged with a white and dark blue beaded lane; cotton cuffs with inked attribution and date of purchase; sole with pasted 1905 newspaper clipping of Rain-in-the-Face's obituary and further inscribed, Purchased from Chief Rain in the Face, Feb 9th. 1904, Winona, ND, length 10 in. fourth quarter 19th century The town of Winona was located on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, between the borders of North and South Dakota. No longer in existence, Winona was a place of brothels and saloons where the military posted at Fort Yates would find entertainment. The town was abandoned around 1912.
