George R. Lawrence (1868-1938) was a commercial photographer from Illinois who would often build kites and balloons for aerial panoramic photography. This is one of his world renowned photographs of the ruins of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. Lawrence used a 49-pound camera and a celluloid film plate to take this 160 degree panoramic photograph from a kite located 2000 feet in the air above the San Francisco Bay. He captured the entire city on a single 17" x 48" contact print made from a single piece of film. Condition: Not examined outside of frame, scattered foxing on mat, laid on canvas with some cracking, mainly in center sky, two vertical lines of fading in upper center, else VG+.
