Beschreibung:

with imprint of E. Hattorff, Hamburg, Germany, 1885. A fur-trimmed mantle over a Chilkat blanket woven of mountain goat wool distinguishes this Nuxalt man. His collar of twisted cedar bark is accented with skins of ermine. His headdress is composed of otter fur, with a crown of birdskin and ermine. In 1885, a Norwegian entrepreneur Phillip Jacobson brought nine Bella Coola Indian men to perform at Carl Hagenbeck's Zoo in Hamburg, Germany. Wearing exotic costumes, feathered headdresses and dancing to the cadence if drums and rattles, the group created a sensation. Later, they toured to 22 other German cities, including Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, and Cologne. Jacobson's troupe was the first to tour in Europe, subsequent to the Indian performers George Catlin had brought there during the 1840s. The wild success of the Bella Coola performers was a factor in the decision of William F. Cody to mount a European tour of his Wild West Show two years later. A recent Canadian documentary by Barbara Hager, From Bella Coola to Berlin, explores the effects that Jacobson's performers had upon their audiences and their contribution to the preservation of Nuxalt culture. Condition: Excellent.
