Group of 17 stereo view cards, on ochre mounts with photographer’s mounted label. Group of rare stereo view cards of views taken around the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in 1905, which took place in Portland, Oregon. The views here include two rare views of the airship “Gelatin” which was used by the young pioneering aviator Lincoln Beechey in his flights over the fair. Also two unusual views of the “captive balloon” attraction. No other examples could be located on OCLC (nor on the internet, nor in works on the topic). Mautz notes that Stevens was active in Portland between 1905-09, but that in 1905 he was working for the Kiser Photography Company-- however, as his printed label (affixed to each card) shows, Stevens was not only self-employed, but billing himself as creator of “Official Photographs Lewis and Clark Centennial” (Biographies of Western Photographers, p.393). The label hedges the truth—he was not one of the official photographers. Photographers Fred and Oscar Kiser billed themselves as the “Lewis and Clark Official Photographic Co.” while William H. Rau was perhaps the official official photographer (as he was for the 1904 St. Louis Expo) and the one with the official concession. These facts—and the somewhat amateur quality of the views-- perhaps explains why these Stevens’ stereos of this important regional Western commercial and cultural event are so rare. Two of the cards have penciled captions on verso.
