RAY, JAMES EARL Assassin . An archive consisting of 4 autograph letters signed, 23 typed letters signed and 11 documents signed ("J.E.R.," "J.E. Ray" and "James E. Ray") to a variety of recipients, all from prison, Nashville, November 1990 - March 1994. Together approximately 45 pages, 24mo, oblong 8vo and 4to, with 27 original envelopes . A revealing group of letters from Ray, convicted of the 1968 shooting of Martin Luther King. Most concern Ray's continuing legal efforts to be granted a second trial, others relate to the press coverage when rumours of a conspiracy to murder King resurfaced in the early 1990s. The letters also comment on world politics, the U.S. prison system, etc. 23 May 1991: "...As to one project, my brother hired a Nashville pilot last year to pull a banner over Nashville reading 'Rapists have trials why not JE Ray.' The pilot got cold feet & ripped us off -- we now have him in court when he lied about pulling the banner...I think the new book, it will be named 'Who Killed MLK...'" 19 January 1992: "[I]n...4 or 5 months I should know if there will be a trial or what ever. There is a lot of pressure to have someone in jail in the MLK homicide..." 20 April 1992: "...The rifle the police found...is in litigation. I have testified in court it wasn't mine..." 14 April 1993: "We are not on any ego trips here. This publicity has been going on for years, except now it isn't all one sided..." 30 December 1993: "...I don't know if you know it or not but the London 'Observer' broke the latest news re the MLK case. The U.S. media wouldn't touch...The European media has been a lot more forthcoming in the MLK case then the U.S. moguls..." And 10 other related items. Together 75 items . (75)
