"SITTING AT THAT TABLE IN GENEVA WAS A LOT LIKE THOSE OLD DAYS ACROSS THE TABLE FROM THE STUDIO HEADS IN HOLLYWOOD" AFTER MEETING GORBACHEV AT THE GENEVA SUMMIT, Reagan writes a revealing personal letter to former actor, U.S. Senator (and, like Reagan, past president of the Screen Actors Guild), George Murphy, describing the summit. From the tone of Reagan's letter it appears that Murphy expressed concerns about excessive concessions on the part of the U.S. "We didn't go there concession minded," Reagan writes, "and we stayed that way. Murph, I have to say George Schultz has quietly done some housecleaning without conducting a purge. Our team was solid as a rock and no one was trying to budge me out of my stubborn tracks. As a matter of fact they were urging me on....Now don't worry that I've lost my bearings, I can still spot those other types and I'm always watching for them...Some of the old names like Gus Hall [American Communist Party leader] are still mounting the rostrum in California...." In their two day summit that saw 15 hours of meetings, including five hours of one-on-one talks, the two leaders pledged to cut offensive nuclear weapons by 50 percent, promised to work towards eliminating intermediate range nuclear weapons (realized in the 1987 INF Treaty), and to trade visits to each other's capital. George Murphy, like Reagan, turned from Hollywood to politics, winning election as Republican Senator for California. In his acting career he appeared in classics such as Broadway Melody of 1940 and Battleground . A fine, important account of a major diplomatic episode.
