First Edition. Investigations on the orbit of the newly-discovered planet Uranus, identified by William Herschel in 1781, the first planet to be discovered since antiquity. Initially thought to be a comet, its orbit was calculated by Lexell and found to be planetary (nearly circular), and it became clear that the body was a new planet, not a comet. There was also a Russian language edition published by the Academy at the same time. OCLC/WorldCat locates only seven copies of this French language edition, and fewer of the Russian.
