(4to) 21.7x15.5 cm (8½x6¼"), modern half calf & boards. First Edition. First edition of Alembert's work on the famous three-body problem, the solution of which led him to further researches in celestial mechanics and to calculating the precession of the equinoxes. As the DSB observes, "The precession of the equinoxes, a problem previously attacked by Clairaut, was very difficult. D'Alembert's method was similar to Clairaut's, but he employed more terms in his integration of the equation of motion and arrived at a solution more in accord with the observed motion of the earth." Lot Amendments Condition: Title page a little dusty, near fine in modern binding. Item number: 287910
