Full-page heraldic woodcut on a1v, full-page woodcut of the Arbor consanguinitatis , some woodcut Lombard initials, n1 with woodcut folded in at edges to protect it from trimming by the binder. (Stain at upper edge causing some marginal tears, browned, some spotting.) Binding : contemporary unbevelled wooden boards, rebacked in modern brown morocco antique, two brass fore-edge catches (without clasps), pastedowns from a legal edition printed by Peter Schoeffer (type 91G, 50 lines, double column), title lettered along fore-edge (slight wear at joints). Provenance : contemporary annotations -- Johann Fichard (1512-1581): title inscription -- New York, General Theological Seminary, the gift of E. Eigenbrodt: bookplates, stamps; sale, Christie's New York, 1 October 1980, lot 54 (to Lathrop Harper). FIRST EDITION of this collection of the laws of the city of Worms. This copy was previously owned by the lawyer Johann Fichard. After studying with Jacobus Micyllus, Fichard became Procurator at the imperial law courts and later served as diplomat to the Reichstag. His ownership of the present volume was clearly out of professional interest, as he himself was the author of similar Reformations for the Duke of Solms and for Frankfurt-am-Main. The blank leaves, intended for readers' annotations, are found differently distributed in copies. In the present copy, as in the Harvard Law Library copy, they are c6, d4, k1, n6, q8, and t7. The woodcut Arbor consanguinitatis , here printed on n1 and foliated xcii with text printed on its verso, is not found in all copies, and is not noted by Schreiber. The BL copy has a blank n1, and neither it nor the BSB copy has blank c6. A LARGE COPY, significantly larger than the British Library copy. RARE: this is the only copy to have been offered at auction in over 25 years. HC 13719*; BMC II, 501 (IB. 8664); BSB-Ink R-26; Harvard/Walsh S-866A; Schreiber 5054; Goff R-40.
