Regency Scarlet and Gilt-Japanned Papier-Mâché Tray by Henry Clay, London Early 19th century Depicting pagodas in exotic landscapes, the back with impressed stamp: 'CLAY / LONDON'. Tray 22 x 30 inches (59.9 x 76.2 cm), height on later stand 16 3/4 inches (42.5 cm). Provenance: Christie's, New York, October 17, 1997, . A similar black and gilt-japanned papier-mâché 'tea-board' by Henry Clay is in the collection of the Wolverhampton Arts and Heritage (Bantock House Museum); see Yvonne Jones, Japanned Papier Mâché and Tinware c. 1740-1940 , 2012, p. 136, fig. 120 and p. 70, fig. 60 for a detail showing variously colored bronze powders. C
Previous restorations, one corner with repaired breaks, craquelure to entire surface, rubbing and losses to decoration, old marks and scratches to later base.
