REPTON, Humphrey (1752-1818). Observations on the theory and practice of landscape gardening, including some remarks on Grecian and Gothic architecture . London: T. Bensley for J. Taylor, 1805. 4° (337 x 262mm). Stipple engraved portrait by W. Holl after S. Shelley and 27 plates, including 22 aquatints, one double-page and one folding, 12 hand-coloured and 12 with overslips. A further 32 text illustrations, most wood-engraved, also including 11 aquatints, 2 with overslips. (2B4v with ink splashes at foot also slightly affecting the plate opposite, the folding plate with two short tears near folds, final plate spotted at margins, occasional thumb-soiling.) Contemporary half calf (worn, upper cover detached). Provenance : Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent and Strathern (1767-1820), father of Queen Victoria (ownership signature on front blank); Sir Michael Ernest Sadler, University College, Oxford (1861-1943, book label). Second edition. First published in 1803, the Observations was the second of Repton's three books on landscape gardening, employing his ingenious device of overslips, or 'slides' as he called them, to show before and after scenes on an improved estate. Although his career as a landscape gardener only started in 1788, by 1803 Repton had been called upon to give his opinion on 200 estates (see p. 6 of the preface). In Henrey's opinion, his works are an important record of his principles and practices as a landscape gardener, with plates which are mostly after the original sketches in the 'Red books,' as well as being among the 'finest examples' of books with aquatint illustration. Cf. Abbey Scenery 390; Henrey I, p. 546; Tooley, p. 209.
