RESOLUTION OF THANKS FROM THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS A manuscript calligraphic document in ink on vellum by J.B. Philp, headed 'Forty-fifth Congress of the United States, at the second Session, Begun and held at the City of Washington [...] on Monday, the Third day of December, eighteen hundred and seventy-seven. Joint Resolution extending the thanks of Congress to Henry M. Stanley', and signed 'Approved, February 7, 1878. R.B. Hayes [President of the United States] Sam J. Randall Speaker of the House of Representatives. W.A. Wheeler Vice-President of the United States and President of the Senate', and signed by the calligrapher at the foot 'J.B. Philp, Penman, Washington, D.C February 1886', the leaf 377 x 530mm (laid down on card, some staining and marking). An important document from the US Congress, recognising Stanleys achievements. The resolution was passed up in February 1878, the document drawn up in Feburary 1886 and was presumably presented to Stanley in the autumn of 1886, when he started his lecture tour of the States.
